You can use your ASUS RT-AC68U using PPPoE if you have a separate modem. I have a similar setup and am using an ASUS RT-AC56U wireless router with a TP-Link TD-8817 which I bought off Amazon for about £13:50.

I might add that the DSL-AC68U runs in a fairly complex small office network with several servers and clients. It is the access point sitting in front of [internet side] of a Sophos powered firewall which also provides primary VPN access to remote users. I knew that DSL-AC68U is not using the Boardcom Chipset for the ADSL/VDSL, so that make me thinking to buy RT-AC68U + Modem. If your downstream attenuation is high.. over around 35db then the DSL version is unsuitable.. Asus used a poor adsl chip and charged a mint for it. If you get FTTB in the future you will be supplied a suitable vdsl modem..
