Instead of mirroring your built-in display, you can try to extend your desktop and use the Apple TV as a second screen. In my experience (Macbook Pro Retina), this helps a lot and gives me the best results.

I sign in to nowtv.com on macbook, switch on apple tv and airplay mirroring, when the app launches to play the program, sound is working but the screen just greys out. If I switch off airplay, then the content plays properly. I would like to get a refund on my subscription if this cant be fixed please.
